Vintage Inspirations

Handbags are one of those items that women never have enough of. We do not look for a new bag because the one we are using is worn out or falling apart. We have our favorites, but we also want to be prepared to change bags with different outfits, or depending on where we are going at the time. Sometimes we may even carry more than one bag if our needs warrant it.

Handbags can have many different jobs to fulfill. One can carry your favorite hobby for you when you are waiting at your doctors’ office or in a bank line. Another may carry your favorite books that you are trying to read, but have trouble finding the time for, so you carry them in your car for that special occasion. Then there are your glamorous handbags that are set aside for very special occasions. A woman can never have too many bags! Thus, offer handbags to sell to customers that are always looking for something new, practical, and unique.

One of the ultimate finds in handbags is a one-of-a-kind bag. This makes them worth even more than the average bags found in stores. Finding vintage fabrics in local thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales, or any other place like on eBay is your best bet. If you can rely on thrift stores for the majority of your fabrics, you should do well when looking at your profit margin. Be sure to look for any items that are made of fabric too, not just fabric alone. Cutting these items up to make handbags can give you even more to choose from, and some unusual opportunities to exclusive design ideas.

You have a number of options in deciding the way you choose to sell your handbags. Selling online is a convenient way to offer them, try your own website, or start by selling on eBay or with any other auction format. This often times can be a good source of advertising for you by offering your bags in auctions and then letting your bidders know you have more bags in your store (website) also. (One bag is rarely enough for us.)
If you can use the words ‘vintage’, ‘designer’, or ‘one-of-a-kind’ in your titles when selling your handbags in auctions, you will have more than the average interest taken in your bags. You want to stand out among the many people selling as your competition.

Creating and selling vintage handbags should make for a successful business opportunity. To start this kind of business you will need to know how to sew, own a reliable sewing machine, have an inspired eye for designing, and keep a close eye on the style needs and wants of women of our day. Also, remember the different age groups that you will want to try to attract. The more age groups you can appeal too, the better. Your average selling price can run around $100.00 a piece.

Vintage Garters

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Vintage Garters

Garters were not originally designed to be a sexy addition to a woman’s lingerie. They were actually first created to hold up a woman’s stockings. Make them as they were made in the beginning (of better quality) or have someone make them for you. Sell them as a pair for about $75.

With all of the different types of fabrics and laces we have to choose from now, you should be able to offer a vast variety of appealing garters. Start with the simple elastic (large rubber band) types traditionally used at wedding receptions, taken off by the groom. These can be very simple but fancy looking and they are usually very lacy. They can be embellished with lace, ribbons, trinkets, pockets, and even small bells. Some women even wear these types now to carry their cell phones or a tube of lipstick. (You can make them with small pockets that secretly carry things in them). The more creative you can be with your garters, the more you will sell.

You might even want to design and offer some very basic garters like the ones worn before the invention of elastic. These were usually made of a durable fabric or leather strap and were tied on to secure stockings.

Make the original type of garters your first choice to offer, but not just these only. There are also garters that have clips on them; these were made more popular in the middle 1900’s. They typically are straps (2 or 3) per leg that have clips on them that hold up the nylons. These straps are attached to a belt, skirt, or band that is worn around the hips or waist. These can be very plain and functional or very fancy and sexy.

Offer as many different types of garters as you can find, or design and make. Make sure that you offer a wide variety of sizes, styles, colors, and options. Offer your buyers the option to even order custom-made garters and charge a little more for them.

This type of product would be a great item to sell on-line. If you could create your own web site to sell your products, you should be able to be successful. Create a memorable name for your site; and make it easy to use, have excellent pictures, and easy to order from, for your customers. Make sure that you include very good pictures, descriptions, and the prices of each item you are selling. Also, be sure to include the shipping cost for each item, or if you are making enough of a profit offer to ship for free!

You might even make and offer handsome garters for men to wear. They can slip them on their arm to make a statement. Many centuries ago, garters were used to attach armor worn by men. You could design masculine garters that could hold a small cell phone or Mp3 device on a man’s upper arm. Some men wear small garters to hold up there socks also.

Be sure to add a link to your website that allows people who speak languages other than English to easily navigate and understand it. Several websites will perform this free if you simply add their small bit of code to your website. This will help you sell your items internationally.

Microwave Heat Bags

Microwave Heat Bags & Clothes

The benefits of microwave heat packs are three-fold. They can be used for pain and stress relief, to heat a bed, as well as to aid sleep. Recently modern technology has been utilized to bring the concept of the hot water bottle in to the new millennium. Heat-retaining gel has been used; however this has a limited lifespan. Many people are turning to tried and tested methods, while heated water carries a risk of scalding, microwaved wheat and dried pulses, retains heat safely. Just two minutes in the microwave can bring pain relief, a warm bed and - with the addition of aromatherapy oils - natural healing.

Commonly listed on eBay as “wheat bags” or “wheat heat packs”, these items sell for a range of prices, depending on the design. They all usually contain wheat, sometimes mixed with lavender flower buds. Alternatives to wheat are flax seed and sunflower seeds. 20kg of wheat can be purchased online for as little as $20 with each heat pack holding no more than 1kg, this is an excellent price.

As noted above, the design of the bag affects the value of these items. You might be looking at designing a novelty bag; although needlework goes beyond the scope of this article, you may find that an item such as a microwave heat bag is something which would be more attractive to women rather than men as such you may want to incorporate the bag into a cuddly toy-style design.

The fabric used is important too, both on the value of the item and on how the bag feels to the user when heated. Velvet bags in particular are popular especially for use around the neck. Most bags are made of standard cotton fabric that is among the most versatile materials.

A basic pain relief heat bag may resemble a small beanbag or be around three times the length of a beanbag. These are the simplest versions, and can be sold for around $5 on eBay. The elongated version in particular can be applied to larger areas of pain as well be wrapped around the neck; however you may consider that specializing in shaped bags is an area to exploit. A horseshoe shape suits the neck perfectly.

Smaller bags can be used as inserts, and you may decide that there is a lack of heated gloves and hats and scarves available. What better way to heat these items and provide you customers with added protection against the cold than to sell scarves and mittens and hats with space for small heat pack inserts?

ZhuZhuuk’s eBay Store (link: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Zhu-Zhu_Wheat-bag-Heatpack) lists a range of heat packs filled with wheat. These are both specially designed and shaped bags or cuddly-toy shaped items that bags can be inserted into. Zhuzhuuk, who has a feedback rating of over 2950 (99.9% positive) sells the heat bags for a Buy it Now price of $7.99, or as an auction item with a starting price of $4.99. This eBay seller is extremely popular in this niche, and lists the items in the Health & Beauty > Natural/Alternative Therapies > Healing category.

There is a massive range of possibilities with this eBay selling idea, so good luck developing your heat bags. You might even try targeting other markets within eBay, such as the sports sections.

Whatever you do, remember to maintain a level of professionalism, and treat your dealings with online customers with the same dignity and respect that you would treat your local customers.

Medieval Middle Age Shoes

Medieval Middle Age Shoes

Medieval middle age shoes have become a fashion statement of the present year. People enjoy wearing medieval shoes to functions like weddings and conventions. There are also people who wear them just for fashion and comfort. So if you have an interest in sewing, you can easily start a lucrative business stitching together medieval shoes.

People are nowadays ready to pay hefty prices for these medieval shoes. There is not much investment required to start a business in sewing medieval pairs of shoes. Of course, leather is the most important necessity, followed with shears for cutting the leather, a stitch marker to mark the stitches to be made, an awl for cutting purposes, saddler’s needles for sewing and wax to polish the shoes.

The procedure of sewing a pair of medieval shoes is not too difficult. It is enough if you have an interest and some skill in sewing; learning the process is not difficult. You first have to measure the feet of the client on an unfolded paper bag. These drawings are then transferred to more durable medium like cardboard; be precise in the drawings as a quarter an inch of sloppiness changes the foot size. This drawing is then transferred to the leather using a stitch marker. Once the preferred design is chosen, the leather is cut using the awl, and then stitched according to the design. Wax is of course, used to polish the completed shoes.

Medieval shoes are found in many different patterns; in some designs, the whole shoe is cut in a single piece of leather with no separate pieces made. Other designs involve the shoe being made of separate pieces of leather to be stitched together. These different cutting styles produce different shoes. It is up to you and the customer to decide on which shoe design to choose.

The choice of leather you use for your business is important. The leather should be flexible and durable as it has a great impact on the shape and the strength of the final product. It is the oak tanned calf leather that was most famous in medieval times, and so may be the preferred leather for most clients. However this leather is not widely available. So use 1.5mm thick chrome tanned cow leather should be used instead.

To make the medieval shoes more waterproof you can use a leather dressing like Coachaline. Decorating the shoes with a punched or stamped decoration enhances the look of the medieval shoes. As you can see, not much investment is involved in this business. However, you can easily charge up to $80 for a pair of shoes. This provides you with a great margin; so you could imagine the profit you will make creating medieval shoes. You could also make these medieval shoes to be sold on your own website or through eBay. Just place advertisements on the internet, with some testimonials and you are bound to get some eager customers turning to you for a pair of these unique and stylistic medieval shoes! Just think, sewing only two pairs of shoes a day proves to make this a rather lucrative business; so why not have a go at it?

Making The Most Money In FarmVille

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

FarmVille is a great place to go to escape the rigors of everyday life. You can get back to nature and enjoy the peace and tranquility that comes from working on the land. However, not everything in FarmVille is an escape from the ordinary. You still need money for just about everything you do. You have to buy the seeds to plant, and you’ll even have to pay a small sum for each plot of land you plow.

These costs are easily managed of course because you’re harvesting and selling your crops for more than it cost to plant them. There are a lot of other items you can buy in the FarmVille market to decorate and build up your farm, and you won’t be able to get these without some significant sums of cash. Buying these items will also get you some much needed experience points to help you advance to the next level, so you’ll have to find a way to make sure you have enough money for all the discretionary items you want to buy. Let’s learn how to get farm cash on FarmVille.

Because you’ll be needing your coins for so much in FarmVille, you need to maximize the earning potential of your farm. The best way to do this is to figure out which crops pay out the most coins per hour. For example, strawberries sell for 35 coins per plot of land harvested and they take 4 hours to grow. Pumpkins, on the other hand, take 8 hours to grow and sell for 68 coins per plot of land harvested. This is a good way to earn farm cash on FarmVille.

That means, for the same acreage planted, you’ll earn 8.75 coins per hour by planting strawberries, while the pumpkins will only get you 8.5 coins per hour. This may seem like a small difference, but these small amounts can add up fast. Of course, you won’t be getting your money’s worth unless you can harvest the crops as soon as they’re ready and immediately replant on that land.

If you’re not going to be able to get back to your farm for 8 hours, you’re much better off planting the pumpkins. The longer you leave a crop after it’s done maturing, the less you’ll be getting per hour once you harvest it. You can only make money fast on crops that mature quickly if you’re going to be able to harvest and replant as soon as they’re ready for sale. Make sure you take these details into consideration when you’re selecting your seeds at the Market, and you’ll be seeing your bank account swelling in no time.

You can get more tips like this on our FarmVille video.

Safe Wardrobe Keeping

Safe Wardrobe Keeping

Do you have extra storage space that you want to make a profit with but just cannot think of a way to do it? This may be a way to make use of it!

Most of us change our wardrobe with the seasons. We take all the winter sweaters, jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, ski outfits, boots, heavy comforters, and flannel sheets and store them away as soon as the weather warms up. Then when the weather gets cold again, we lug it all out and start the whole process over again. Unfortunately, as soon as we bring them down from the attic or up from the basement, we open them up to discover that moths or small critters have invaded the box or container and ruined them! Moreover, even if they are not ruined, they need laundering all over again to get out any spiders or musty smells that may have settled in while they were in storage. Every season, we go through this same time-consuming routine; unpacking, sorting, washing, drying, ironing, hanging up and then we start boxing up the departing season’s clothing and linens. It’s a sometimes back-breaking process of packing and hauling boxes and totes around. Everyone finds this frustrating, especially because no one’s closet or storage space ever seems big enough. The process is a big hassle and as each season comes to a close, it is one that they dread.

This is where you come in! You will store these clothes and other items in a temperature controlled environment and create an online digital wardrobe for people, so that their clothing and linens are safe, clean, and organized. People can log into your website, review the inventory of their seasonal clothing and linens that you are storing and request to have them delivered to their home when the time comes to use them again! You can charge $20 per month for this service and a small delivery charge for each batch of clothing and linens that they request delivered back to them. You can charge an extra fee for long distance deliveries in cases where people would like these goods delivered to their summer home or an alternate residence. They can schedule an automatic delivery date for each time or have them delivered a little at a time, as needed.

For each item, you will need to take a digital photo and write a small description of the piece, including color, any defects or stains and condition of the garment or linen. This should take place when the items are picked up and the customer should sign a copy of the pick-up slip to prevent any potential future blame should any defects be discovered later when the items are returned to them. Each customer will need a password-protected sign-on ID for your website so that they can keep track of which items are in your possession. This will provide your customers with privacy and a sense of control of the process.

You will likely want to advertise your services by running an advertisement in local phone directories, list your business with an online business directory also. Print up flyers and post them in places where people of all occupations and lifestyles would be likely to frequent. Be sure to include popular lunch places and coffee shops! Most post offices and grocery stores also have bulletin boards that will allow you to place an advertisement on. Be sure to take advantage of any public bulletin boards in your immediate area to find people who are looking for you and your services. Don’t neglect places like medical service buildings, health food stores, libraries, bridal shops, and any other place that your potential clients may frequent.

In no time at all, you will have built up a large clientele base. You will obtain many by word of mouth as your customers are wowed by your professional services and how easy storing their clothing and linens has become for them!

Novelty Ironing Board Covers

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Novelty Ironing Board Covers

Ironing can be such a boring chore for anyone. Why not offer to make ironing a little more enjoyable and exciting, with newly designed ironing board covers? The ones offered in most stores, or the ones that come with the boards, are generally very utilitarian looking. Most homes have one and they all look pretty much alike. Offer a totally new cover design for people to change the look of their boring old looking ironing boards.

If you are able to design and sew these covers yourself, this could be a profitable new ‘business idea’ that you will be happy you decided to start. Put your skill into a fun occupation designing something new all of the time. Be sure to be educated on fabric types, if you already aren’t. You will need to use fabrics that are durable and color-fast. As styles change, you can incorporate them into your ironing board covers too. Just always, be aware of fads and popular new ideas that are catching on.

Have you ever noticed that there is never a very good place to keep an ironing board? We always hide them wherever we can find enough room. We hide them because they aren’t an attractive item to look at. You can change that with new designs on the covers. If we don’t have enough time to put it away in the morning, when we are rushing around trying to get dressed, it won’t look that bad sitting there waiting for you when you get home. A designer cover on it can change its look significantly.

Since an ironing board requires a cover, why not design and offer attractive covers for all different age groups and tastes? From wild to conservative styles, this is just not an item easily found. There are many different sizes of ironing boards too, the typical full free standing size, but there are the smaller version boards, for apartments and such, that sit on table tops. Make sure you offer covers for these smaller boards too!

You should be able to easily make $30 a piece for these full size covers, and $20 for the smaller versions. This should give you a good profit margin. The characteristic covers are made of basic cotton fabrics that typically cost little. If some of your fabric choices are a little thin you might need to back them with another layer of a stronger, but inexpensive fabric. Remember that the covers need to hold up under stretching tightly over the board, also high heat from an iron, so make them durable and strong.

This would be a great ‘business idea’ to have on the web. Nevertheless, you could offer them also in small boutiques that specialize in new innovative ideas for the home. Remember that advertising at first can give your new business a boost. Be sure to have good pictures of your products and if you are willing to take special orders for some buyers, it could help you keep up with new style ideas too.

Style up Your Business with Trendy Hair Accessories

Style up Your Business with Trendy Hair Accessories

You have seen the new hair products - ponytails with hair attached to them, fuzzy hair ties, and other similar items. Kids, teens, and adults alike are getting into this trend of new and unique hair accessories. Get into the business with your creativity and style. Get funky and unique with your products - that is what the girls want!

People generally start a business with a commodity that is much in demand in the market, and presently, hair accessories are commodities that all females, young and old alike, have a longing for. With just the right fancy hair accessory, a plain Jane can change into a stylish diva!

Hair accessories come in numerous designs and rates. Jeweled headbands are being worn by the rich and the beautiful. Wearing a combination of hair accessories can really make a statement. For instance, try pairing a flashy item covered in rhinestones or glittery jewels with one that is gold and in a simple design. Sometimes elegant barrettes are just what is needed to make even your dullest business suit look more feminine! Accessories can be both pretty and easy to use.

Another famous hair accessory is the rhinestone comb. This is sure to catch everyone’s eye when wearing it in the hair.

The ponytail has been around for quite some time. However, instead of using the simple ponytail elastics, there are many designer ponytail fasteners’ people enjoy wearing.

The short hair sticks are great hair accessories for use with one’s quick updo, classic buns, and simple chignons.

Then there are the funky flowers to use as a hair accessory. These flowers are usually made of silk or satin with beaded centers and can work both as a hair accessory and a pin on party dresses.

Investing in a new business that creates hair accessories need not be a complicated venture. However, you should first decide how much you can invest in your initial designs. Once the financial aspects are taken into consideration, the next are the legal points related to the set-up of this business. Find out the local and zonal laws you have to abide to in the running of the business, to prevent any possible complications that may arise in the future of the business. To get this done right, it may be necessary to have a lawyer give you the appropriate guidance.

Once you have overcome these hurdles, the next task is the hiring of employees for your business. Small-scale business does not need many employees; just make sure that the employees are trustworthy and have no prior criminal background. People with a criminal background may end up duping you in business records or in the number of your accessories. Some employees may try reselling your hair accessories by stealing them and selling them in private! Nowadays, most employers make applicants of jobs with their business go through a criminal background check to eradicate such problems.

With the hiring of employees done, you are sure to learn that no business can flourish without any marketing. Marketing plays a very important part in the success of a business. Create business cards having your shop’s name and yours for distribution purposes. You could also advertise the hair accessories you sell through the internet, whereby customers can choose the wanted hair accessory while sitting in the comfort of their homes. Customers buying the hair accessories that you sell in fact, turn out to be the best marketing gimmick that you could wish for. Once you have all these steps intact for starting a hair accessory business, you are sure to find you and your business flourishing in no time!

Stitch Your Way to a Great Income

Stitch Your Way to a Great Income

Donna needed a gift for her mother who seemed to have everything. She decided to search on the Internet to see if she could find something unusual she could make. She searched for hours and was finally ready to give up. Everything she found seemed like just a waste of time or would just add to the knickknacks that her mother already had sitting around her house collecting dust. That is, until she found this one site. They offered a software product that solved her problem.

She made the gift and when her mother opened it, she was so surprised and pleased by the unique creation. Now it sits on her sofa proudly displayed like a cherished possession.

Soon Donna started getting calls to make more of these items. Before long, Donna was making a nice amount of money from her initial gift to her mother.

Now, you’re probably wondering what she found, and how she could start making money with these items. Let me tell you how!

What She Found:

The software she found takes a photograph and turns it into a Cross Stitch pattern. By using photos of pets, children, family, and other precious memories, she has started a Photo to Cross Stitch Service. Her clients supply the photographs and she converts them into a pattern which she then makes into whatever item the client wants. These items can be samplers to hang on the wall, pillows, baby blankets, coverlets, or any other item that the client chooses.

How to Get Started:

The first thing you will need is the software which is available under the Resource section at the end of this article. It is fairly inexpensive and they provide a version for Windows and Mac.

The other things you will need are basic cross stitching tools (i.e., thread in a large variety of colors, scissors, and fabric for the projects). You could also purchase whatever else you need for the project just before making it. The software program tells you what colors and amounts you need for each photo converted.

You will also need some business cards. These can be created on your home computer using MS Works, MS Word, or Publisher. Business card blanks can be purchased at almost any office supply store and sometimes at KMart or WalMart. They are easy to print on your own printer. Of course, you could always use a printing service to do this but if you are starting your own Photo to Cross Stitch Service you will probably want to design your own cards too!

Getting Your First Clients:

You could always do like Donna did and make a pillow for someone that you know will cherish it. Make sure it is a person that has lots of visitors to there home and will help you promote your business! Also, give one of your business cards to every person you meet, and to all of your friends and family. Give them two or three so they can share the cards with others.

It is a good idea to take a digital photo of each item you create and put it into an album. This way when you encounter a person who is interested in your service, you can show them items you have previously created!

You could also place a small ad in your local classified section of the newspaper. Make it simple to avoid expenses. Something like: LET ME TURN YOUR PHOTOS INTO GIFTS 555-1234.

If you do not know how to cross stitch or want to use a different method of stitching, you can create your items with petit point or embroidery.

Before you know it, maybe you too will have a great income from staying at home cross stitching other people’s photos!

Old T-Shirts and New Quilts

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Old T-Shirts and New Quilts

Doesn’t it seem like your entire favorite t-shirts just seem to add up over the years and it is hard to part with them because of all the memories that you have attached to them. You wouldn’t dream of ever wearing them again, but you just can’t part with them either, sometimes you couldn’t even fit into them again if you wanted to.

Many people would love to have their entire collection of favorite old and new t-shirts, transformed into a practical warm cozy quilt, blanket, pillowcase, or more. Why not have them bring the t-shirts to you and pay you up to $125 (or more) to transform them into something more practical for them.

Since these can be prize possessions, you will need to handle them carefully and keep them organized, returning any that may not be used in the project. Find out which of the t-shirts are their most important, so that you can make sure that they are incorporated in the project first.

If you enjoy sewing, this should be an easy and fun project to offer others that don’t sew. It is not a complicated project, as long as you are careful and plan the projects well. You will want to make sure that all of your seams are sturdy, since t-shirt material does stretch and can fray. The more professional the finished article, the more money you can ask for to put it together for them.

There are several ways to market your services to the public. You might first make one or two for yourself, so that you can have examples to show to others that you may know that could be interested in your services. Take pictures of your final projects and check with friends and neighbors to see if they would be interested in your service. Advertise your services in your local newspapers too.

Local sewing and craft shops may let you leave small flyers with them also, so it is worth checking with them. You might also offer to teach classes in these types of stores and craft stores to show others how to make these practical projects.

This is an unusual service but once you get the word out you may be pleasantly surprised at how many people would like to have you make items for them. You also have the option of offering your services from a web site store too. Try to come up with a memorable name for your store and offer to sell some items that you can make from old t-shirts you find, in used clothing stores and clearance sales in chain stores. Offer these items on your site and offer to make personal items for your customers also.
